The city of Memphis, Tennessee, was particularly hard hit: Of the approximately twenty thousand who didn't flee the city, seventeen thousand contracted the fever, and more than five thousand died-the equivalent of a million New Yorkers dying in an epidemic today. Moving up the Mississippi River in the late summer, in the span of just a few months the fever killed more than eighteen thousand people. While the American South had grown to expect a yellow fever breakout almost annually, the 1878 epidemic was without question the worst ever. ![]()

For Fanon, this is too reactive of an approach. This is what is sometimes called the “Négritude” movement. The intellectual’s strategy is to counter the demeaning force of colonized culture by “racializing” culture, for instance advocating for a “Negro literature” or “Negro art” that unites all of Africa. What can the colonized do to assert or reclaim or newly produce culture after this kind of brainwashing?įanon begins by considering the “colonized intellectual,” someone who has been educated by the colonist but reacts against him. This chapter asks, relatedly: how can a national culture form after independence? Colonialism destroys and perverts culture, for instance teaching the colonized to consider their past as unworthy or evil. That chapter was about how a nation can form politically to replace the colonists after independence. ![]() ![]() This chapter, which was first presented as a paper at the Second Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Rome in 1959, is in some ways a continuation of the previous chapter. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are also some interesting new facets of the innkeepers assembly as we’re introduced to some dark toxin that impacts the innkeepers peacekeeping authorities. All along Dina has wanted to find her parents, she has a sister living her own life with her vampire husband and a brother out searching the galaxy for their parents, but no one has shown up as a character in the story yet. I liked this book because it starts to pull the family story into the main story. I bought Stephen Mitchell’s translation and selection Ahead of All Parting when I was a teenager. A theme in these essays over the years (first announced here) has been the question of what it means to read lyric poetry, if its verbal density even can be read in the way that a novel or play (or epic poem) can, and whether, moreover, this permanent elusiveness raises it above or lowers it beneath modes like narrative and drama. ![]() ![]() Martin Heidegger’s philosophical glosses in Poetry, Language, Thought-explanations that only redoubled the poetic mystery-sent me back to Rilke, or maybe sent me to Rilke for the first time.
